Phil and Pat Meredith — Befriending Olivet and Joining the Cause

Phil and Pat Meredith became acquainted with Olivet while attending Chicago First Church of the Nazarene. During the 25 years they spent in Illinois, they met a number of alumni and faculty from Olivet. Through knowing these Olivetians, the Merediths found that the mission of ONU aligned with their passion for ministry, Christian fellowship and education. Both Phil and Pat spent their entire careers as educators, and witnessing Olivet’s influence first-hand inspired them to become actively involved in making “Education with a Christian Purpose” a reality for more students.

In addition to being devoted educators, the Merediths have also committed to being astute stewards of the resources with which God has blessed them. Several years ago, they found themselves with some shares of stock that had appreciated significantly. After careful research, they opted to transfer the appreciated stock into a Deferred Charitable Gift Annuity with Olivet. This afforded the Merediths an immediate charitable tax deduction and it also eliminated the capital gains tax. In addition to these savings, the Charitable Gift Annuity secured life-long payments to the Merediths. Realizing that they did not need to receive these payments immediately, the Merediths opted to defer payments until a need arose. (Deferring payments for at least one year secures a higher payout percentage. The payout percentage increases the longer a payment is deferred.)

The Merediths are longtime friends of Olivet and are considered lifelong Olivetians. We are blessed to have them as part of our community.
